This print from Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (full-title: “Looking Tiresome: The Appearance of a Virgin of the Kansei Era”), is from a series of prints of beautiful women, entitled “Thirty-two Aspects of Customs and Manners”.

Yoshitoshi (芳年, 1839-1892) is generally considered the last great master of the Japanese woodblock print (ukiyo-e), and as an innovative genius within the art form.

During his life, he produced as many as 10,000 prints in total; including many series. His career spanned a pivotal period in Japanese history, as he lived through the transition from the old feudal Japan to the beginning of the new modern Japan. Like many Japanese, while interested in new innovations from overseas, over time he became increasingly concerned with the loss of many cultural treasures from traditional Japan, among them the classic woodblock print.
